Walnut Coffee Table – Red Epoxy

The modern walnut coffee table with a splash of red! This modern walnut coffee table features squared off edges, a hand-crafted metal base and a flair of red epoxy. The top of the coffee table was cut from an old growth walnut live edge slab which had a large crotch inclusion. The inclusion allowed us to contrast the rich browns and blacks of walnut grain with eye popping metallic red epoxy. The pedestal base really brings the coffee table together; being interesting but not overpowering the top of the table.

Material: Even for squared off tables we prefer to use live edge wood slabs rather than gluing up dimensional boards. Live edge material, especially walnut, boast a large array of different grain structure, colors, and especially natural defects. These characteristics make for a much more interesting result than manicured ‘boring’ dimensional tops. Walnut is easy to work with, has amazing dark grain with a contrasting white sapwood. The only downside is the price. Black walnut is the most expensive domestic wood species that we sell/work with!

Finish: Our go to finish is rubio monocoat. We apply one coat of finish on the bottom and 2 on the top. The first coat is absorbed into the grain creating a matte but durable finish. The 2nd coat sits on the surface of the grain which not only adds to the durability of the finish but also provides a beautiful, even satin sheen. We apply the finish with a Gem buffer allowing for more finish to remain on the piece resulting is not only a very even application but also a very durable one. The epoxy used is ice cast with a metallic dye. Ice cast is a great epoxy as it is very viscous when fist mixed which allows of bubbleless pours. It also sets faster and harder than most other deep pour epoxies.

Color: Dramatic variations of black, dark brows and several shades of dark reds; typical live edge walnut grain. This top also contains several outer edges with sapwood highlights. The Red epoxy inlay is achieved using a metallic dye. This makes the color swirl with different shades instead of a solid color
